Hailing from Australia’s capital city Canberra, Futility is the result of many drunken conversations between Kurt and Nathan, concerning the city’s lack of doom style bands. While doom was a style we both really liked, it was one neither of us had really pursued yet, in any of our current or former bands, though it was something we had both wanted to try for several years. This being the case, it was decided to recruit like minded individuals for a new project and thus, Futility took shape.
Having previously been the front-man for another local band, we already knew Brendan well and, given that he had expressed similar thoughts to our own on the matter, it seemed natural to approach him. Conveniently, he was also learning Bass at the time, saving us the need to find another member.
While a permanent drummer was still to be found, we set about recording tracks with a drum machine, to use as guides for what would eventually end up being the debut album. By the time we found Duncan, all the tracks had been roughly recorded so it was decided that, after lots of rehearsals, he would replace the drum machine tracks, with the programmed beats being deleted afterwards.
Once this was done, the guitars were re-recorded to achieve a denser, more gritty tone and vocals were added. An early mix of two tracks was self-released as a demo to gauge gig-goers’ interest.
After the band’s first show, we were invited to play at “Doomed”, part of Sydney’s annual “Under the Blue Moon” festival. The response was overwhelmingly positive and almost every copy of the now out of print demo was sold that night.
On February 7, 2009, the debut album was released and several shows have been played since, alongside some of Australia’s best doom acts.
2010 promises to be a year of gigging, writing, rehearsing and with luck, the release of another CD.
Time will tell,
Until then……
Stay miserable
